May 8th, 2010 by admin

A Career in project management can begin in many different ways. Those who work for companies which have a project management office may find on the job training is available while others might pursue education through a post secondary method. Many who have careers in project management have done so by one of the above methods as well as through a certification body such as the Project Management Institute.

On the job training is often where potential project managers get their first experience with this type of management. They can begin as a team member for a smaller project and build up their experience by moving to larger and larger projects with more responsibility until they have sufficient training to become a project manager. Others begin in the management area and are trained specifically to manage projects.

Post secondary education whether through individual courses or structured programs allow potential project managers to receive a wider breath of knowledge than they might otherwise through company specific training. These courses are often aimed at giving the potential manager a wider base to build on with more generalized knowledge.

Those who already have experience in project management whether through actual specific positions or collateral positions might find certification through the Project Management Institute or similar group as a method to reach their career goal. Certification through a recognized industry group such as the Project Management Institute is usually more easily transferred and applied at other companies than training that was completely in house.

All the above methods are paths used to begin a career in project management but they are not the only methods. Those interested in such a career should spend time analyzing their options, research potential career outlooks and find the method that suits them best when entering this challenging field.
