When it comes to online education, one of the most important choices you make is choosing a university. When you choose a traditional university to attend, you are limited by geography. You will either have to move, or you are limited to schools that are nearby. With online education you do not have any of these limitations. You can literally attend online classes from any university in the world. On one hand is very beneficial. You can choose a top university. On the other hand you have so many choices it can be difficult to identify the top schools when they are thrown in together with diploma mills and schools of dubious academic value. It’s very important to understand the nature of for-profit schools when it comes time to choose your college for an online degree. For-profit universities are designed to make money. They may be accredited good schools but they have a profit motive. This isn’t necessarily bad, they often have the money to invest in technology that smaller older schools don’t have available. However, the profit motive means that they may change significantly in the future area even if they are good school now, a different board of directors may try to squeeze more profit from them 10 years down the road. Your school stays on your resume for life, there is a risk that their actions in the future will tarnish the degree you are in today–even if it was a really good school when you attended. The ideal online school is one that has a strong physical presence as well. You are better off choosing a university that happens to have an online degree program then choosing a school that only offers online degrees. The school that has a strong physical presence is likely to be around longer, and be more recognized than it’s online only counterpart. At one point there were very few of these types of institutions. The colleges they had a great reputation didn’t offer classes online. There is still some good colleges that don’t. For example Gayle does not offer any type of online degrees. However, there are growing number of well-known, well recognized institutions that offer degrees online. For example Harvard and Penn State both offer online degree programs. So do Stanford and Columbia.Choosing a school may be difficult simply because there are so many options. However if you determine the quality is of the institution ahead of time it makes it much easier for you to narrow down the selection. For example, if you decide you want to go to an Ivy League school to get your online masters degree, that will narrow you down to just a handful of possible institutions.
