The median salary for a court reporter is usually around $50,000. Not bad considering that many of these are freelancers who are not totally dedicated to their career. Many others who take their job more seriously will make much more than this. This is entirely possible to do when one is made aware of the factors affecting court reporter salaries.

Want a better reporter job? A better paying job? More opportunities to work your way up the ladder? If so, the first place to start is by having a good education and as much certification as possible. Get a degree, find out what programs are available to better your education, and take them. The higher your credentials, the more success you will have.

Experience is key. If you are in the process of getting your court reporting requirements, work hard to find a job in this field where you can begin practicing what you are learning. Some places will allow you to work as an apprentice. The more work time you can get in, the better, and employers will give your resume a second look rather than turning you down when they notice you are straight out of school with no experience.

Skills and capability also have a lot to do with your pay. Make yourself valuable to an attorneys office and they will be willing to up your salary rather than lose you. Be aware that technology can help increase your effectiveness, so know how to use this equipment that is there to help you.

Note that your location will also play into your career and salary. Some areas will require that you pass a difficult exam to be eligible for a job such as this, while others are more flexible. But the economies of different areas will also come into play in determining your pay. If you are willing to move for a better paying job you would do well to do some homework and research different regions.

The ultimate way to increase your wages is to start your own salary. It is important to first build a good reputation for yourself, and then you will have lots of business from those who trust you and your work.
