Palm Tree Care Relatively Easy

Many people shy away from palm trees because they do not believe they live in a climate that will support a palm tree. It is true, palm trees cannot tolerate freezing. But, if it is maintained indoors and given adequate palm tree care the plant can grow and prosper, giving you many years of happiness and beauty. It is especially amusing to watch people’s reaction when coming from a winter storm and being greeted by the sight of live palm tree sitting in our living room. Most of the time they assume it is an artificial silk plant, until they come closer. Once they realize it is a real palm tree they are totally amazed.
The first thing in palm tree care is you must have good nutrient filled soil. This is the most important factor to ensure you palm tree will be healthy and able to fight off diseases. One way to make the palm tree’s soil as close as to the natural soil as possible is to add mycorrhizal fungi. This fungi lives around the tree’s roots supplying it with nutrients and water. It allows the palm tree’s root to expand and establish a strong base. For maintenance, you need to use a slow releasing fertilizer four times a year.
The second thing in palm tree care is watering. For the first six weeks after you plant the tree, you should water the plant twice a week. Do not let the soil dry out with new plants because this will weaken it. After that, it should be twice a month. The way you water the plant is crucial for healthy growth. Remember, the palm tree is bred for the desert. You need to soak the plant by using a slow drip from a hose for a couple of hours to get the optimum desired effect.
The final thing on palm tree care is to prune the plant as little as possible. Let it prune itself naturally by its leaves turning brown and falling to the ground. If you must remove a leave, make sure it is completely dead. Never rip or pull leaves from the palm tree. The bark of the tree is sensitive and easily damaged, proving an easy access point to insects and disease.
Remember, once the palm tree is established it is relatively easy to take care of. To ensure that the palm tree does survive, check to make sure the one you chosen right for your area and you do what is mentioned above. If you do, you will be a successful palm tree owner.
