Wish You Could Make A Court Reporter Salary

The court reporter salary is comparable to the amount of time they want to put into their profession. The freelance reporters are usually the ones making salaries over 100K. But there are other considerations not being disclosed. They don’t get paid vacations, medical benefits or retirement packages. They have to buy their own equipment which is not cheap.

But working as a freelance reporter has its benefits also. You would get to set your own hours, you get to telecommute from home and you are your own boss. If you have a family this could be an ideal career.

If you are lucky enough to get employment with the local or federal government you will have all the benefits but about half the salary. Decide which is better for your lifestyle. But working a nine to five job does not mean that you cannot do freelance work on the side. Then you would have the best of both worlds.

Another contributing factor as to how much money you can make as a court reporter depends on where you live. In rural areas there is not going to be as high a demand for this profession. However, depending on your skills and the capabilities of your internet connection, you could get freelance opportunities also to increase your base court reporter salary.

It really all depends on how much of your personal time you are willing to sacrifice. It is hard work and requires a lot of self discipline. And there are other requirements to the job besides just transcribing.

There are so many avenues available to reporters today. Broadcast captioning, CART for the hearing impaired, real-time court reporting are just a few that are in very high demand. If you have expanded your skills to this level making that six figure salary could easily be a reality.

This career path can be very stressful. Think about some of the cases you may have to be recording in the court room. Dealing with the horrors of the human race in today’s world could lead to an emotional or mental meltdown. At this point you have to ask yourself “Is making a court reporter salary really worth it?”
