Build Your Own Greenhouse

January 27th, 2012 by admin

Gardening is among top hobbies that have been developing in the United States as the time passes. Therefore, the need to build your own greenhouse is equally growing. A factor developing more and more greenhouses in the country is the escalating health concerns and costs of imported food items. Some horticulture enthusiasts are also eager to learn techniques to build their own greenhouses as they are ideal places to grow plants including orchids.

Here’s how to build your own greenhouse while keeping your budget and needs in mind. There are multiple options to choose as material of your greenhouse frame, but the basic methodology of design will be same. Generally, a two-inch plastic plumber’s pipe (also known as PVC) is recommended because it’s probably an easier option to work with as a beginner. Visit your nearest home improvement store to get pipe glue, fittings and PVC. Don’t forget to calculate greenhouse dimensions because it’ll help you to understand your material requirement. Mostly greenhouses are designed in rectangular shape with doors at both sides and a pitched roof. Do not forget to make your greenhouse tall and large enough that it lets you move inside comfortably between plant rows. Start with building rib sections.

Four lengths of PVC pipe, two for pitched roof and one for either wall, are required for this step. There should be a five-foot space in between each rib. Install pipe lengths horizontally for stability of roof and sides. Some drywall screws and the wood planks can be attached to PVC frame just in case you want to add stability. Use UV-protected greenhouse film to wrap entire structure of your greenhouse. Leave extra material to the place where the film touches ground and staple it to a board.

Give enough support to your greenhouse structure by driving rebar into the ground for a few feet. You may use stakes and ropes just like we use with tents to give extra structural stability, just in case you still worry about stability. You may equip your greenhouse with lighting, overhead irrigation, exhaust fans and heat. That’s it. You’ve build your own greenhouse. Need more help? Get backyard greenhouse plans.
